How I learned English
Nowadays English is very important language for anyone in the world to learn. People from all around the world are starting to learn English as their second language and I am not an exception from them. My parents realized that I should learn English so they registered me in a privet school that teach English since first grade in elementary.
I have started learning English since elementary school. It was very basics like learning the alphabet and some vocabulary. When I was in middle school I took extra English courses after I finish school. In high school, my father sent me twice to Canada to study English in the summer. Even though it was short time but it unleashed my potential speaking skills. I start having confident speaking English with native speakers and foreigners.
After I came back from Canada , I started to improve my English by myself. I didn’t put a lot of effort during this time but I was trying to improve my English. I start to watch English movies more and more and reading English novels.
After I have graduated from high school, I wanted to join the scholarship program ( name ) which is provided from the government. I came back to Canada, Vancouver the same city that I have been to twice and spent the best two years of my life. I didn’t know many Arabic friends in Vancouver. In the first six-eight months in Vancouver, I spent my time in just three places: school, gym and library. The majority of my classmates were Latino and there English was very advanced expect of their grammar side. Every day when I set down in the class I feel that I am the worst one in the class. I couldn’t understand everything and sometimes I have to ask the simplest question.
This situation made me decide to improve my English by myself. I started to go to the public library after school and spend 4-6 hours everyday just reading and trying to learn vocabulary. Also, I used to write dairy as much as possible. During this time, I have improved my vocabulary and grammar dramatically. Because I like watching anime, I used to watch Japanese anime with English subtitle and every time I encounter with unknown word I pause the video and write it in my notebook. Regarding to my listening skills, I improved it by watching English movies and listening to the Radio. Then I changed my school to UBC English school which called ELI ( English Language Institute ). During this time, I have increased my effort in reading and I start to improve my speaking skills. ELI was a social environment which make it easy for me to make friendships with international students and even Canadian students.
