How I learned English

How I learned English

Nowadays English is very important language for anyone in the world to learn. People from all around the world are starting to learn English as their second language and I am not an exception from them. My parents realized that I should learn English so they registered me in a privet school that teach English since first grade in elementary.

I have started learning English since elementary school. It was very basics like learning the alphabet and some vocabulary. When I was in middle school I took extra English courses after I finish school. In high school, my father sent me twice to Canada to study English in the summer. Even though it was short time but it unleashed my potential speaking skills. I start having confident speaking English with native speakers and foreigners.

After I came back from Canada , I started to improve my English by myself. I didn’t put a lot of effort during this time but I was trying to improve my English. I start to watch English movies more and more and reading English novels.

After I have graduated from high school, I wanted to join the scholarship program (  name  ) which is provided from the government. I came back to Canada, Vancouver the same city that I have been to twice and spent the best two years of my life. I didn’t know many Arabic friends in Vancouver. In the first six-eight months in Vancouver, I spent my time in just three places: school, gym and library. The majority of my classmates were Latino and there English was very advanced expect of their grammar side. Every day when I set down in the class I feel that I am the worst one in the class. I couldn’t understand everything and sometimes I have to ask the simplest question.

This situation made me decide to improve my English by myself. I started to go to the public library after school and spend 4-6 hours everyday just reading and trying to learn vocabulary. Also, I used to write dairy as much as possible. During this time, I have improved my vocabulary and grammar dramatically. Because I like watching anime, I used to watch Japanese anime with English subtitle and every time I encounter with unknown word I pause the video and write it in my notebook. Regarding to my listening skills, I improved it by watching English movies and listening to the Radio. Then I changed my school to UBC English school which called ELI ( English Language Institute ). During this time, I have increased my effort in reading and I start to improve my speaking skills. ELI was a social environment which make it easy for me to make friendships with international students and even Canadian students.

simple & complex carbs

Hi everyone

Today I am going to talk about the difference between complex and simple carbonates. Even if you don’t care so much about your body fat, it will be interesting to know the difference.

The difference between a simple and complex carb is in how quickly it is digested and absorbed – as well as it’s chemical structure.

Carbohydrates are sugars that come in 2 main forms – simple and complex. This is also referred to as simple sugars and starches. The difference between a simple and complex carb is in how quickly it is digested and absorbed – as well as it’s chemical structure. Most carbohydrates can be broken down by digestion into glucose and these are the carbohydrates we shall look at in this article. For examples of carbohydrates that do not get fully broken down into glucose, see insoluble fiber and sugar alcohols.

Simple carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates are called simple sugars. Sugars are found in a variety of natural food sources including fruit, vegetables, and milk, and give food a sweet taste. But they also raise blood glucose levels quickly. Sugars can be categorized as single sugars (monosaccharides), which include glucose, fructose, and galactose, or double sugars (disaccharides), which include sucrose (table sugar), lactose and maltose. Many processed foods contain added sugars but currently, there is no UK law that requires manufacturers to state how much sugar has been added in processing.

The NHS advises adults to consume less than 70g a day of sugar for men and under 50g of sugar a day for women. However, people with diabetes will benefit from better blood glucose levels if sugar intake can be limited to lower levels. Because sugars provide no nutrition aside from energy (hence why they are often referred to as empty calories), people looking to lose weight will also benefit from eliminating sources of added sugar from their diet.

Note that if you are at risk of hypoglycemia, never worry about taking sugar if it is to avoid or treat a hypo.

Complex carbohydrates

Complex carbohydrates, also known as polysaccharides, are starches formed by longer saccharide chains, which means they take longer to break down.

Chemically, they usually comprise of three or more linked sugars.

Strictly speaking, the term complex carbohydrate refers to any starches, including the highly refined starches found in:

  • White bread
  • Cakes
  • Most pastries and
  • Many other food sources

When dietitians and nutritionists advise having complex carbohydrates, however, they are usually referring to whole grain foods and starchy vegetables which are more slowly absorbed than refined carbohydrate.

Whole grain foods

Whole grain starches include the wheat grain and kernel which provide the majority of fibre and nutrients to be found in starchy foods. When it comes to picking starchy foods, such as rice, bread and any other products made from flour, it’s best to opt for whole grain versions of these products. Whilst whole grain foods impact upon blood glucose levels more slowly than other forms of carbohydrate, higher levels of carbohydrate can still raise blood sugar levels substantially. Blood glucose testing before and meals is a good way to assess how much carbohydrate your body can adequately cope with.

I hope that this article helps you to understand the difference.

Thanks for reading the article.

Why I am always concern of how much sugar do I observe from food

I have been always obsessed with how much sugar do I observe from food. When I hold any food product in my hand, I automatically check the sugar percentage in the product. It is because food products contain too much sugar and it is usually white sugar. White sugar and brown sugar are different in many ways. For now, I will talk about white sugar. Generally speaking, sugar is not really bad for your health but too much sugar is very bad for your health. You can try to check the food products that you always eat, and check how many grams of sugar they contain. Not that a teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4grams.

teaspoon So if the product contains 12 grams of sugar, it is mean three teaspoons of sugar like in the picture above. Not that some product and especially drinks display the nutrition of the product for each 100ml and they might be 335ml. Which mean if they display 12 grams of sugar for each 100ml, it is mean the total sugar in the drink will be more then 12X3 grams of sugar = +36grams = 9 teaspoons.

I hope that I have made you realize how much food products contain too much sugar and explained why I am always obsessed with sugar.

How I became interested in learning languages

maxresdefaultI have been living all my life in my country and I even when I travel with my family I always go to an Arabic country. However, after I have finish high school. I went to Canada to study English.

In the first weeks in Canada I had difficulty getting adapted to the culture and the language. It was very depressing time not to be able to say what you want to say. Fortunately, I wasn’t afraid of making mistakes. that was one of the reasons that I improved my English in good pace. I have been interacting with so many nationalities and cultures.

I was 18 years and spending all that time with so many nationalities made me realize that I like learning languages. I have an imagination that I can communicate with many nationalities IN THIER LANGUAGES. I know that I can communicate with so many people by English but the idea that I can communicate with them by their language made me get excited a lot.

One of the reason that made want to learn more languages is to be able to speak with bigger part of the world population. It is not necessarily that I am going to speak the language but I can read and understand the written material in that language. Some might debate that nowadays it is easy to get translation by many means. This is one of the biggest misconception that you should avoid. I am not going to deny that translation make great job for people to get to know each other but when you translate text from a language to another there is big possibility to lose the meaning and worst of all to change the meaning.

I want to learn as much languages as possible. The first language that I want to learn is Japanese. I already know many vocabulary. I went to Vancouver to study English and during learning English, I met many international students from different countries. I spent a year and ten months to study English. If I to say my experience in short, I would say that the most important things is to have many vocabulary. Of course the first thing is to learn the alphabet then the grammar. Right after you don’t really have problems with grammar, you have to focus on one thing is expanding your vocabulary. From my experience, You don’t have to learn the grammar deeply. Learn the basics then the rest is going to stick in your mind after you use it in your daily life everyday for long time like a year.

The reason why it is illegal for women in Saudi Arabia to drive

Hi everyone

Here is just my thought on the reasons of why women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive.

First, I will talk about how effect of this law. Because women cannot drive in Saudi Arabia, they need a driver to go anywhere so most families in Saudi Arabia have a driver. Even though some families depends on themselves, but they are minority and most of them they would prefer to have a personal driver. The driver might be for personal use which mean he work only for the family or he might be a driver just for going to school or work.

The personal driver is usually a foreigner guy rather than a saudi guy. They usually come from India, Pakistan, sri lanka, Bangladesh, , Philippines, Indonesia, Egypt and others. In most cases, the driver does not has a working hours. The family can just call he at any time and tell him to come in. Some families build a small room outside the house for him so they can call him at anytime.

Having a bus driver to go to school or to go to work is not really convenience because the driver is going to pick up many people before the final destination and this is going to take time and you often will  get headache or throw up when you arrive. The biggest problem with this method is that some drivers expect you to wait in front of your door and if you didn’t come out, they are just going to leave you go to the next person. Also, you have to pay a lot of money every month for the driver and that will reduce your income a lot.

I have to note that public transportation is not for everyday use. They are usually available for going from one city to another. A daily use of public transportation is not available in all cities and if it was available, it is not dependable because they are usually not on time.

so this is just a short explanation of they situation right now. Let’s talk about the reasons behind that. This is just my thought behind the reason so you might disagree with me.

It is because of the culture and traditions.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that it is illegal for women to drive. Even though Saudi Arabia culture has many similarities with its surrounded countries, but its the only country that does not allow women to drive?! why is that ?!

Let’s me talk a little bit about the history of Saudi Arabia. Long time ago, more than 100 years ago, long time before oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia, people used to live in tents in the desert.  They used to stay a few weeks in one place than they move to another place and so on. Women has to stay inside the tent and they are not allowed to go out of the tent without permission from her father or brother or husband. I am not going to go in details because I am not sure how that was applied exactly.

Arab people are conservative people and they do not like any change in their tradition and culture. However, many Arabic countries had encountered a situation that have made them accept some changes in their culture and traditions. The idea that women can’t go out without permission from her husband or father or brother has been in the culture for so many generations. Ever though oil was discovered and Saudi Arabia have changed a lot and got modernized, many tradition was still carried on for generations even though it does not suit the daily life now. Because this idea was carried on for generations, there was no law established to allow women to drive legally. By the time I have written this blog, women in Saudi Arabia were given the right to drive after 10 months. However, I have always told my friends that the government has absolutely no problem for women to drive and it is just a culture disagreement. It turn out that I was right.

Even though I am from Saudi Arabia, my explanation might not be accurate but that what I think is happening.

This is my first blog ever. Let me introduce myself a little.

My name is Mohammad Adel Abualsaud. When foreigners ask me about my name I usually say just mohammad because my name is long and difficult to pronounce. My Japanese friends call me Moha-kun ( shortcut for my name in Japanese way ). I spent two years in Canada to study English where I met had the chance to meet people from all nationalities.

I have many interests such as soccer, reading, learning languages, cosmology, history and traveling. When I was in middle school I start to play soccer like crazy. I still play soccer often but not so much because I don’t have so much time. After I finished high school, I started to spend my time to improve my English. I started reading English children books and watching documentary movies on Youtube. As a result, I realized that I enjoy reading so I start to spend more and more time on reading English books. Also, I was watching documentary movies about cosmology and history and that’s how I got my interest to history and cosmology.

That’s was a small introduction about myself. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any question.
